The first step in any successful thrift store visit is figuring out what you want beforehand; otherwise, you might end up spending more time browsing around than actually buying anything. Figuring out what you need ahead of time will make it easier to search through all the options available at your local thrift store or consignment shop (or even garage sale).

What is Thrifting and Why Should You Do It?

Thrifting is an exciting way to shop for good quality items, while still saving some money. In this blog post, we will discuss thrifting and why it is a great choice when shopping for your family’s needs.

Thrift shopping can be a great way to save money and find unique items for your home, but it can also be tricky if you don’t know what you are doing. Here are some tips on how to start thrift shopping:

Do Your Research

There are a lot of different thrift stores out there, so it’s important to do your research and find the ones that are closest to you. Once you have found a few stores, take some time to look through their inventory online or read the reviews so that you know what to expect when you go. I am a sucker for reviews. If it received less than 4 stars, I will most likely not begin there.

Start Small

Thrift shopping can be overwhelming if you try to do too much at once. Start by picking out a few items that you need, such as clothes or household items, and then work your way up to more complicated items like furniture. I often write down items in my notebook that I would like to get to remind me of what I’m looking for next time I go thrifting.

Be patient

It may take some time to find the perfect item at a thrift store. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t find what you are looking for right away. I tend to look early for seasonal items. You’ll often have a better selection to choose from and you can hold out for the one you love. In my early days of thrifting, I became impatient and just bought my daughter her winter jacket at retail. Sure enough, the following week I revisited my local thrift store and saw an adorable, warm jacket in her size for a 1/4 of the price I paid retail. UGH!

Here are 10 Great Deals to Look for When Thrift Shopping for Families!

When shopping for the family at a thrift store, it is important to look for good deals. Not just price but quality too. Just because it is inexpensive does not mean you should lower your standards. Here are 10 great deals to look for:

1. Clothes

Look for clothes that are in good condition and are from a reputable brand. Brand names tend to hold up better. I also check zippers, buttons, seams and for any visible stains, rips, holes, or odors (eww). Sometimes I still miss a defect but doing a thorough check beforehand often helps eliminate a large majority of them.

2. Toys

Toys are a great deal at thrift stores! Look for toys that are in good condition and that your child will enjoy playing with. After 4 children, I can count on one hand how many toys my children have played with for longer than 5 minutes. I can stomach a $5 toy that gets abandoned after a few uses vs a $70 one!

3. Furniture

Furniture is another great deal at family thrift stores! Be sure to inspect the furniture for damage and make sure it is the right size for your home. We just picked up an all-wood desk for my oldest son’s room. It was a little outdated, but quality was more important since I’ll be passing it down to 3 other children.

4. Home Decor

Home decor is a great find at your local family thrift store! Look for items that are in good condition and that will match the style of your home. This is an inexpensive way to freshen up a particular room in the house or when your children’s space needs updating as they go through the many different phases of what they like and don’t like.

5. Books

You will find a wide array of books at your family thrift center! Look for books that are in good condition and that you will enjoy reading. My three oldest are enjoying the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Yes, we enjoy the wonderful benefits of our local library but with 3 children wanting to read them and my one son who can be a bit rough with them, I’ll pay a $1 for the convenience of owning them!

6. Kitchen Appliances

Kitchen appliances are a great find at thrift stores! Be sure to inspect the appliances for damage and make sure they are in working order. You are sure to find some unbeatable prices when it comes to kitchen appliances.

7. Bedding

Bedding is a great find at thrift stores! Look for bedding that is in good condition and that will match the style of your room. I found all my children’s second set of sheets at thrift stores. I’ll have to admit, I went so long with just one set of sheets for them. It has been nice putting the second set of sheets on the bed immediately after we take off the dirty ones. It was the worst finding out at bedtime that I forgot to put their only set in the dryer.

8. Dishes

Dishes are a great find at thrift stores! Look for dishes that are free from chips or scratches. I recently purchased an 8 pack of impeccable Mikasa dinner plates for $6.99!

9. Glasses

Glasses are also a great find at thrift stores! We have recently moved closer to family and friends and have been hosting a lot more get togethers. As a family with young children, we rarely use glasses in our home. To ensure our guests will want to come back, we need to up our glasses inventory as I think it’s frowned upon to serve an adult beverage in your daughter’s paw patrol cup.

10. Knick-Knacks

At thrift stores, you’ll find a plethora of knick-knacks! Look for knick-knacks that are in good working order and complement the decor of your home. I think some thrift stores are a haven for knick-knacks. The last thrift store I visited had floor to ceiling shelves dedicated to them!

Conclusion

Hopefully this helps your family save money. Be sure to donate anything you are not using that is in good condition. Many thrift stores operate for a worthy cause. You will also be doing our planet a good service when you buy used instead of new.

By following these tips, you can find great deals when shopping for your family at a thrift store. Be sure to double check the items for damage and make sure they are in good condition before you buy them. Buy what you love and love what you buy. Happy thrifting!
